A Tongue Scraper to Detox + Balance Hormones.

Updated: Nov 24, 2021

Why You Need a Tongue Scraper and Why It Can Help Balance Hormones.

ree

I discovered the health benefits of tongue scraping on my journey of trying to balance my hormones. While I was googling the cure for my “feeling crazy“ symptoms - I found other symptoms that I could closely relate to and thought…I will try anything! I learned how the toxins in our body can easily throw our hormone balance out of whack and I was on a mission to find ways to re-balance. And for the cost of a fancy coffee I purchased my first anti-crazy tool…a copper tongue scraper.

The practice of tongue scraping actually dates back thousands of years. It was originally used in ancient Ayurvedic and Chinese wellness traditions as they believe that the tongue is the mirror to our internal health and our current state of wellbeing.

Our bodies constantly accumulate bacteria and are exposed to toxins from our food, beverages, skin care products and our environment. Tongue scraping removes toxins and bacteria from the tongue. While we sleep toxins in our body come to rest on our tongues, without removing them they are reabsorbed by our bodies. The re-absorption of toxins causes a weakened digestive fire, causing imbalances in the mind and body ranging from:

  • general body aches

  • acne

  • headaches

  • mood swings

  • anxiousness & feelings of unbalance

  • mood swings & mental fog

  • depression

  • bloating & constipation

  • diarrhea & digestive issues

  • diminished appetite

  • overall sense of fatigue or weakness

  • heart palpitations and more.

Removing toxins and bacteria not only improves your immune system but it allows your body, hormones, taste buds and digestion to work in balance with ease. It improves your sense of taste, which helps you to become more receptive to your body’s response to cravings and intuitive to its nutritional needs. In addition to being the landing place for toxins, our tongue also has a layer of keratin, a natural protective layer on the tongue. This layer is usually kept in balance by the foods that we eat. Roughage foods, like leafy, green foods and fiber usually remove the excess keratin and keep this layer in balance. However, a diet excessive in soft foods creates a buildup on the tongue creating the ‘hairy tongue’ effect. This is where your trusty tongue scraper can come in handy for damage control. Who knew that all those years of mothers nagging, “make sure you eat your green vegetables” held such ancient wisdom?

And while your toothbrush will still work as a method of cleaning the tongue, I confirm that a metal tongue scraper works much more effectively and in a more time- efficient manner. Tongue scrapers can be made of many metals, but new studies are confirming the ancient Ayurvedic preference of using copper. Copper is toxic to bad bacteria and also provides important enzymes to our overall oral health. I like this tongue scraper on Amazon.

So while I am in no way saying, “Girl, you need to check your breath!” or “Dude, trust me, your girlfriend will thank me.” I am saying you must at least TRY a tongue scraper. It’s essentially an inexpensive, super simple detox tool for overall health and wellness. And who doesn’t want a bit of help with hormones, anxiety, digestion and ‘mask-breathe’ while we are going through a stressful worldwide pandemic . So why not?

So it’s simple…just scrape and enjoy the benefits of taking care of your body from the head to toe to tongue!

HOW TO USE A TONGUE SCRAPER:

Having a daily routine is central to Ayurveda for grounding the nervous system and maintaining good health, and if you are going to add just one simple Ayurvedic wellness habit to your routine make it tongue scraping for the optimum health and detoxification benefits.

  • Use first thing in the morning on an empty stomach, before brushing your teeth or drinking any fluids and in the evening before bed.

  • Hold the tongue scraper in both hands, extend the tongue and place the scraper on the surface of the tongue as far back as comfortable (gentle & pain free).

  • Gently pull the tongue scraper forward, removing the layer of white coating on the surface of the tongue. Repeat this 5-10 times.

  • Rinse out your mouth and notice how clean your mouth feels!

  • Wipe tongue scraper with a cloth for cleaning. It will darken naturally.

HAPPY SCRAPING!
